For the last month, we’ve been working on getting other map types into the game. Initially, we designed the game to be all dungeon oriented, and those maps were randomly generated. We talked about it and tossed ideas back and forth, and we really wanted to introduce an overworld into the game in order to create a bigger story. For a long time, we said absolutely no to the concept of adding an overworld. We knew that it would mean tripling the content of the game, which is tough considering that I am coding and also creating all of the art. I am not a skilled pixel artist by any means, but I think we get by.
We finally decided to bite the bullet and take the game into the realm that we wanted to take it into since the beginning. I find myself constantly revising my art in order to improve the look of the game. The end result of this is that we now have evolved all of our art into something that we feel looks much better (but we are far from finished). Without any more hesitation, here are some of our recent works. I promise the entire game will not be taking place with constant darkness. I just so happened to be working on tuning the lighting engine and adding new emitters to maps for things like torches.
